Scare at Uhuru Park over unattended bag

There was a security scare at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park Friday afternoon over an abandoned bag with police being called in to check its contents.

Police cordoned off the area, delaying preparations for the rally to be held at the venue on Saturday.
The bag was later claimed by a young man presumed to be its owner.

The Park is the venue for the Saturday’s political rally to be held by the opposition Cord coalition politicians, to welcome home the party principal Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga is set to arrive Saturday from the US where he has been on a lecture tour for more than two months.
Cord party leaders led by vice president Kalonzo Musyoka addressed a press conference at the venue, where they urged supporters to keep calm during the planned rally.

Earlier Friday, Mr Odinga appealed to his supporters remains peaceful as they prepare to welcome him.

How Boda Boda operators in Kitengela built an estate by saving Sh100 a day

It all started in November 2009 after the boda boda operators got tired of frequent arrests by traffic police and the squalid conditions of the houses they were living in.

“The police were arresting our members even for little traffic offences and this angered us since we were losing motor bikes in the process due to confiscation. We then saw it wise to start a saving plan to help us paying for the fines as well as to improve our living conditions,” says Aloise Mwai, the group’s chairman.

To achieve this, the group came up with three goals: Planting trees in Kitengela town to help reduce dust; building themselves houses; and buying motorcycles for each member, rather than riding hired ones.

They have succeeded in buying themselves motorcycles; tree planting is on-going (although they say they are facing several challenges, including lack of seeds, high maintenance costs that include frequent watering and cultivation). Currently, they are in the process of completing houses for  members.

Advice

Before starting the real estate project, they approached the Isinya District Co-operative Officer, Frank Maina, who advised them to form a group through which they could get loans. That is when they registered Kitengela Motorcycle Owners (Kitemoto) with 200 members.

However, about 100 members quit, saying the group would be like another pyramid scheme.

“Since we had set goals and we were focused on attaining them, we decided to move on,” says group secretary Gathaga Maina.

The group went for training on financial management, bookkeeping and savings.

They then approached the National Co-operative Housing Union (Nachu) nine months after inception. Nachu told them they could save and own houses and pay back at a low interest rate.

“What inspired us more to own houses was the fact that if we channelled the money we were spending on rent every month into repaying the Nachu loan for seven years, we could each own a Sh430,000 house,” says Gathaga.

They each started saving Sh100 per day in 2010. When each member’s savings hit Sh60,000, they bought a 50-acre land in Millennium area in Kisaju, Kajiado County, at Sh15 million.

“It was not an easy task saving Sh100 per day…it was a sacrifice that forced most of us to give up on leisure activities and focus on saving,” says John Ndegwa, a member.

Today, the 100 members are beaming with joy, since they are the proud owners of the Ngasemo estate.

Located 800m from Namanga-Kajiado Road and 13km from Kitengela town on an earth road, the estate comprises 100 bedsitters (starter units) for the members and 24 three-bedroom bungalows, ready for occupation. Each bungalow is going for Sh4.7 million to the public.

The starter units come with extra space for expansion. Since only 50 members have been able to pay the required Sh7,600 per month, the rest of the 50 units are rented to mama mbogas, who pay the Sh7,600 per month.

The bungalows come with tiled floors, two bedrooms and one master ensuite, with modern kitchen consisting of sink, tap, work tops, upper and lower kitchen cabinets and dining area-cum living room.

Present situation

The estate has borehole water. Landscaping is to be done soon; power connection is being worked on. Also in place is chain link fence. A perimeter wall has also been planned. A septic tank has been installed for sewage disposal.

The members are toying with the idea of renting houses belonging to those who will not be willing to stay in the estate to students from the soon-to-be-constructed Tangaza College and existing institutions like KAG University and Kampala International University.

The members are, however, calling upon the Government to help them through youth fund to clear the loans so that they can start planning for phase two of the estate. The membership has since increased to 400.

“If we get funding from the government, we will be able to pay the loan quickly within less than seven years since loan is on reducing balance,” says Aloise.

Aloise is also requesting the Kajiado County government to build roads leading to the estates, including Ngasemo, which gets muddy when it rains.

The group also offers products for members like emergency loans.

According to Timothy Lekake, Eastern Regional Housing Officer with Nachu, the union works closely with various housing co-operatives to ensure decent living for low-income Kenyans.

Any interested group has to pay an affiliation fee of Sh12,500 — Sh2,500 caters for registration while Sh10,000 is for shareholding (a share is Sh10). “We had to conduct a needs assessment first for the members to ascertain the financial and income status and found that they were okay and went ahead to build for them houses,” says Lekake . He added: “The main objective of this project is to eliminate the mushrooming of slums and provide decent houses for the low-income class and those living in informal settlements.” Lekake said Nachu has already done such projects in Nairobi’s Kawangware slums, Nakuru, Kondele in Kisumu, Mlolongo and now Kitengela.

Frank Maina, the Isinya Sub County Co-operative Officer who registers co-operatives within the sub-county, applauded the boda boda operators.

“I am proud of this project because many people, including myself, used to view boda boda operators as people with no vision. They have come up with a project worth emulating,” he told Home and Away at the project’s site.

He lauded the members for their discipline to save and manage their time well.

Aloise said Kitemoto members are also looking for a biogas investor to install the bio digester, which they hope to produce alternative energy to serve the estate.

Today, the Kitemoto chairman is a busy person, with different groups across the country inviting him for lectures.

“We are willing to share with more groups out there on how we got to where we are today,” he says.

Di Maria: It hurts to be linked with Tottenham

The Real Madrid winger was strongly rumoured to be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu last summer as los Blancos made room for Gareth Bale, but is determined to stay
Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria says that "it hurts" to have been linked with a move to Tottenham last summer.

The Argentine was frequently rumoured to be nearing an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013 as los Blancos made room for Gareth Bale, though Mesut Ozil was the player to eventually make way as he joined Arsenal.

Speculation continues to follow Di Maria, who played a key role in Madrid's Champions League triumph, but he is adamant that he will stay if the club want him to do so.

"It hurts when you're always doing your best for your club and then you hear that you might be going to Tottenham," he told Marca.

"I spoke with the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] last summer. I wanted to stay and he wanted me to stay as well. He told me that he counted on me and it was up to me from then on.

"I have grown a lot under Ancelotti. He got the best out of me. Things have gone well and I made the right decision to stay.

"I am not going to lie, I know that there are clubs that want to sign me and can match Real Madrid's demands but that’s up to my representatives and the club. I will stay if the club wants me to stay.

"I am not thinking about my future now. We will see what Madrid have in mind, whether they want me to stay or leave.

"I am happy at Madrid. I had a great season and always had everybody’s support but sometimes you don’t have a choice, even when you want to stay yourself."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger signs contract extension

After months of speculation, the Arsenal manager has signed a new contract.

After months of speculation, and a couple months of panic where it looked like he might not sign, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has signed a new contract, which will take him until May 2017, which will take his Arsenal tenure to over 20 years.

Wenger said "I want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world. We are all determined to bring more success to this club", while the chairman, Sir Chips Keswick and majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, were understandably delighted.

Giroud reveals he is in talks over new Arsenal contract

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he is in negotiations with the club with a view to extending his contract beyond 2016

Giroud, who signed from Montpellier for £12 million two summers ago, has become an integral part of the Arsenal side since the departure of Robin van Persie and is intent on building on recent successes.

"I have two years left on my contract [until June 2016] but we are in negotiations to extend. For now, I am here. There are many great things to do,"

he told footmercato.net.

"I feel comfortable in the Premier League. My first season not too bad, I had a pretty good second. I hope to do even better [next season]. I am progressing from year to year, the same as the team."

He scored two goals for France on Monday night as Les Bleus warmed up for the World Cup with a 4-0 friendly victory over Norway.

Tottenham appoint Pochettino as new manager

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a five-year deal.

The Argentine resigned from Southampton after 18 months with the club.

The 42-year-old becomes Tottenham's 10th manager since 2001 and replaces Tim Sherwood who was sacked on 13 May.

"This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," Pochettino told the Spurs website.

Pochettino's assistant Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez have also left Southampton to join him at Spurs.

The White Hart Lane club started last season with Andre Villas-Boas as manager but sacked him in December.

Sherwood replaced the Portuguese and led the club to a sixth place finish in the top-flight.

Tottenham also sold forward Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record £85.3m fee last summer as they signed Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela.

"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad," added Pochettino.

"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.

"We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."

The former Espanyol boss took over at Southampton in January 2013, when he replaced Nigel Adkins, and led them to eighth last season - their highest finish in the Premier League.

Kenyan man murdered in US days after his graduation

A Kenyan man who had just graduated from a US University has died after being assaulted at a weekend party in Dallas, Texas.

Brian Okemwa Gitenya was struck by an American man, Xavien Deavonni Griffin, during an argument on Monday morning.

According to Jambonewspot.com, a Kenyan Diaspora news Website, the incident occurred as scores of Kenyans swarmed Dallas from all over the US to celebrate Memorial Day, one of the four

most notable holidays on the US calendar. Gitenya had arrived in Dallas on Friday evening from St Paul Minnesota where he lived. He had reportedly attended one of the many parties after arriving in the Texan capital.

Gitenya had just graduated from an Iowa University with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. He was among the few students who graduated cum laude (with distinction) during the 83rd commencement ceremony held on May 17 at Briar Cliff University in Iowa.

Last year, he graduated with an Applied Science Associate degree in Nursing fom Iowa Lakes Community College.

Dallas Police have told the local media that the assailant has been arrested following the attack which happened at 5.45am.

By the time of going to press, details of what led to the altercation were scanty.

Sonko, Shebesh record statements over gun drama

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and Woman Representative Rachael Shebesh have separately recorded statements with the police after gun shots were fired during a scuffle at a city restaurant over the weekend.

Kilimani head of CID George Ojuka said the leaders and their bodyguards recorded statements on Tuesday morning.

The gun drama occurred at the Caribea restaurant
on Wood Avenue in Kilimani on Saturday night.

Poor rainfall pushes up cost of power

Consumers will pay an extra Sh2 per unit of electricity starting this month.

This is because depressed rainfall has reduced the water levels in key dams, forcing the country to use thermal power.

The government had pledged to lower the cost of electricity by 40 per cent to make the country an attractive investment destination.

This promise will now be put on hold.

“The fuel cost charge will rise to Sh7.22/kwh from Sh5.19/kwh from May as a result of increased thermal generation.

This will ensure recovery of unrecovered amounts from January to May 2014,” said Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) acting director-general Fredrick Nyang’.

Kenya Power has since January been recovering the pass-through cost from monthly power bills as more thermal output displaced hydropower, with the dams shedding 10 metres of their spilling points this month.

“The outstanding amount is Sh2.4 billion.

This will be gradually recovered in the monthly power bills up to November this year,” said the Kenya Power managing director, Mr Ben Chumo, during a tour of the Masinga dam last week.

Thermal power currently accounts for 42 per cent of the total electricity, more than double the level recorded during the same period last year when it accounted for just 19 per cent.

Expensive thermal power was to be removed last December and replaced with affordable geothermal electricity.

ERC says the expected cost of fuel charge is likely to reduce with the commissioning of 280MW geothermal projects and resumption of the short rains in October.

Upsurge of thermal use

“The commissioning of the 280MW geothermal power projects experienced delays, hence the need to reduce the extraction levels so as to extend the available storage.

Consequently, an upsurge of thermal use to meet demand, hence increasing fuel costs,” said Dr Nyang’.

Hydro is the predominant source of power in Kenya but it is currently facing challenges because of low rain.

This has left the country in a tough situation, with the possibility of rationing power or turning to diesel plants.

Kenya’s current installed capacity is 1,700MW against demand for 2,236MW, leaving a shortfall of 536MW, and this is after providing for a 30 per cent reserve margin.

While thermals are mainly concentrated at the Coast, completion of the Mombasa-Nairobi 400KV line will also reduce transmission losses, currently at 18 per cent, because of its high voltage carrying capacity to the capital, where 60 per cent of the demand is concentrated.

Manufacturers, however, insist on the availability, stability, and reliability of the power supplied.

“It is better if we have expensive but consistent power in the national grid,” said Pradeep Paunrana, the managing director Athi River Mining Ltd, the cement manufacturers.

Mr Paunrana is also the incoming chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM).

Dedicated lines

“There is a need to catch up on electricity generation.

While this is part of the Jubilee manifesto, it is also in line with the KAM business agenda.

Coordination of these projects with the private sector will avoid passing on unnecessary costs to consumers,” added Mr Paunrana.

“We are among the top 200 consumers of power and we would do with dedicated lines of reliable power.

This will help lower our production costs and make us competitive,” he said.

Transfer news: Arsenal set to re-sign Carlos Vela in £3million transfer

Reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal have activated a buy-back clause to re-sign Carlos Vela for just £3m.

The Mexican left the Emirates Stadium in summer 2011 for €2m after struggling for opportunities under Arsene Wenger – with the Gunners including a €3m clause which allowed them to bring the player back to North London.

The 25-year-old striker has been a sensation in La Liga this season, scoring 15 goals and grabbing 12 assists in 34 starting appearances.

Atletico Madrid were reportedly considering meeting his €30m release clause to replace Diego Costa, but it looks as though Arsenal have beaten Diego Simeone's side and a number of other interested parties.

Vela could operate both as a striker and on the flank, providing Wenger with good cover for Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero reclaims his seat pending appeal

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will continue to serve as governor of Nairobi county until the Supreme Court determines his appeal against a ruling that had nullified his election. This is after Kidero rushed to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to file a petition to appeal the ruling.

In a majority decision by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, it was ruled that Dr Kidero’s challenger during the 2013 gubernatorial election, Ferdinand Waititu had raised sufficient grounds to have the results nullified.

The Supreme Court suspended the ruling by the Court of Appeal that had nullified his election pending determination of the appeal while also issuing an order restraining the Independent Election and Boundary Commission (IEBC) from declaring the seat vacant until the appeal is determined.

Dr  Kidero filed the petition at the Supreme Court through lawyer Tom Ojienda.
