LIST OF HIGH PROFILE STARS SET TO MISS THE WORLD CUP

Here is a look at those out indefinitely and the ones that still have a chance to feature in Brazil.

Out

Franck Ribery
France, Bayern Munich
The 31-year-old suffered a mysterious injury to the buttocks in the middle of the season and required minor surgery, only for back pains to persist. Ribery has played only once for Bayern Munich since April 29, and he missed important time in the Champions League. He also missed both of France’s World Cup warm-up matches. “He had to stop in training,” said France coach Didier Deschamps, “the pain was too strong.”

Riccardo Montolivo
Italy, AC Milan
The whole dressing room sat quietly as the Italian players thought about midfielder Riccardo Montolivo. Italy played their first friendly in London last Saturday, and after 15 minutes Montolivo struck out his leg and collided with another player. The 29-year-old broke his tibia. Montolivo had played consistently for Italy since 2010, when coach Cesare Prandelli took over. “He’s a player with a strong personality inside the changing room,” said Prandelli, “and that’s also why his teammates were in shock.”

Jay Rodriguez
England, Southampton
Jay Rodriguez was making steady progress until he ruptured his ACL. At 24, Rodriguez had made his first appearance for England, and he scored 15 goals for Southampton. Before that, he had spent lots of time in the second tier of English football, even going for a stint in Scotland.

Kevin Strootman
Netherlands, AS Roma
The anterior cruciate ligament strikes again. Kevin Strootman needed surgery after injuring his knee in a game for Roma. He was one of the most efficient midfielders in Serie A up until then. The 24-year-old scored five goals, many from long distances, and put up six assists.

Marco Reus
Germany, Borussia Dortmund
The 25-year-old forward rolled his left ankle in a friendly against Armenia on Friday. It was later determined that he partially tore a ligament and will be out for six to seven weeks.

Theo Walcott
England, Arsenal
Another one of England’s dynamic players, Theo Walcott was hauled off on a stretcher during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over rival Tottenham in the FA Cup in January. He has not returned. His knee is a mangled mess. Walcott missed the 2010 World Cup after then coach Fabio Capello decided to cut the winger from his squad. That time, Walcott had to prove himself again; this time, he is learning how to walk again.

Christian Benteke
Belgium, Aston Villa
There is still much time for Christian Benteke to make many more World Cup appearances, but his debut was delayed when he snapped his Achilles tendon in April. Benteke is one of the Premier League’s finest strikers, scoring 29 goals over the past two seasons in England.

Victor Valdes
Spain, Barcelona
Victor Valdes may not have played as the first-choice goalkeeper for Spain in this World Cup anyway. (Iker Casillas is the main man, even if he doesn’t even play all the games for his club Real Madrid.) But Valdes blew out his right knee in March, and the 32-year-old lost any hope at all. He has since decided to depart Barcelona, where he played 535 games and won six La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies.

Roman Shirokov
Russia, Zenit St. Petersburg
The captain of Russia had done his training by himself in the weeks prior to the World Cup, testing out his injured Achilles. But coach Fabio Capello said the 32-year-old tweaked it again, and Shirokov will require surgery.

Questionable

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
England, Arsenal
The speedy Arsenal winger Alex Ox-Chamberlain is probably the youngest notable on the sidelines at 20 years old. He fell awkwardly after making a challenge in a friendly against Ecuador earlier this week. He sustained a medial knee ligament injury. The English FA is unsure of his availability for the World Cup. Coach Roy Hodgson said that the team has the right to replace him “up to 24 hours before the first game.”

Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal, Real Madrid
A witch doctor in Ghana claims responsibility for Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent injury problems, but in reality the 29-year-old has complained about his knee for parts of this past season. He was even at risk of missing the Champions League final, but he ended up scoring in a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid. It is uncertain whether Ronaldo will be ready for Portugal’s first World Cup match against Germany on Monday, June 16, but he will miss a warm-up match against Mexico on Saturday.

Probable

Diego Costa
Spain, Atletico Madrid
In a bid to recover for the Champions League final, Diego Costa flew to Serbia to receive horse placenta treatment. But it did not work: the 25-year-old striker limped off after nine minutes. He has since taken the time to recover, and reports in England indicate that he has already passed his medical ahead of a move to Premier League club Chelsea.

Luis Suarez
Uruguay, Liverpool
A few weeks ago, Luis Suarez was rolled out of a hospital in Montevideo in a grey hoody. He underwent surgery to fix his knee, and he missed the rest of Uruguay’s pre-tournament friendlies. He is likely to feature in the World Cup, most probably in their second game of the group stage against Costa Rica, but the news still shocked teammates. “The truth is that I felt ill,” defender Diego Godin told reporters, “it is something that nobody expected. He is our figurehead, our star.

Tragedy! BrighterMonday and Cheki Founder Shot Dead in Nairobi

Carey Eaton, the co-founder of popular sites Cheki.co.ke, Brightermonday.co.ke, BuyrentKenya.co.ke and other similar sites across Africa is dead.

According to a press release sent yesterday by his company One Africa Media, Mr Eaton died following an armed robbery at a friend’s house in Nairobi.

Below is the statement.
It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the untimely death of Kenyan businessman Carey Eaton, who passed away in tragic circumstances after an armed robbery at a friend’s home in Nairobi in the early hours of this morning. Carey was the co-founder of the One Africa Media group of companies and one of the inspirational leaders of the technology revolution happening across the continent of Africa. He was on the boards of many companies and was well respected as a leader in the emerging online business sector where he also played a mentorship role to young technology entrepreneurs.
One Africa Media comprises Cheki, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya and StayNow in Kenya, as well as similar Internet businesses across Africa.
Previously CIO of the Australian classified group SEEK, Carey returned home to Kenya in 2011 to start Cheki. From humble beginnings he grew Cheki into Kenya’s number one car portal and the larger group of companies into Africa’s largest classified group. The Kenyan operation now includes over 150 people spread across the country.
Carey was intelligent and bold but wielded this gift with a humility that gave all around him the confidence to achieve more than they knew was possible. However, it is not Carey the business leader that we will miss as much as Carey the man: energetic, passionate and connected to us all in some special way.
What can never be taken away is the legacy around us in the team and the brands that he built. When we have mourned the loss of our friend we will, with renewed resolve, get back to building his vision into a great legacy. In celebration of his life.
Carey leaves behind his wife Steph, and children Noah, ILola, Ted and Archie.
May he rest in peace and the criminals who took his life be brought to justice.

National Dialogue: Raila Odinga warns of ‘storm’ if State ignores talks plea

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy leader Raila Odinga has cautioned President Uhuru Kenyatta of a “political storm” if the Jubilee government maintains a hardline stance against the national dialogue his team is seeking.

But in a quick rejoinder from Nyeri, at the burial of Governor Nderitu Gachagua’s father, Deputy President William Ruto hit back at the Opposition. “We are telling them that the election is over, it is time they gave us a break and let us implement our manifesto. After three-and-half years we will be back to the electorate and they will decide,” said Ruto, who has been against the dialogue.

Ruto said the Government was stable and would withstand the pressure from the Opposition.
“Let me assure Kenyans that the Government under the stewardship of President Uhuru Kenyatta is firm. We are used to these noises and we will not let down Kenyans,’’ the DP went on.
But in what seems to be a hardening of positions five days since he returned from abroad, the former Prime Minister said the country is in crisis on various fronts, including insecurity and corruption. Raila said these matters could not be sorted out by the Jubilee coalition alone.

Addressing a political rally in Nairobi’s Eastleigh Estate, Raila told Uhuru he couldn’t afford to play “deaf and dumb” to demands for serious talks between the Jubilee government and the Opposition.
Raila asked Uhuru to brace for a political storm that will sweep across the country.

“I tell my brother Uhuru, ‘You have to look up and see the coming storm. This will not be an ordinary storm. It will be a powerful roaring political storm, which can only be stopped if you hold serious talks with us. There is no turning back. The country is in a crisis,’” Raila threatened.
He added: “If the President rejects our offer for talks, Kenyans will conduct their own talks during “Saba Saba Day” (July 7) and make a decision there on how to move forward.”

The Orange leader termed as an insult likening the “national dialogue” to a “cup of tea” at State House.
He insisted that he wants nothing short of substantive discussions and tight agreements on key national issues including tackling what he termed as runaway insecurity, corruption, threats to Devolution and the disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

“The talks we are demanding are not about inviting us to State House for a cup of tea with the President. We don’t lack cups of tea where we are now. No, that would be an insult. We want serious discussions on how the country can move forward.”

He went on: “Things are so bad that we can’t wait for 2017. The talks have to happen now.”  He said Uhuru appears willing to engage in substantive discussions with the Opposition, but is being dissuaded by a clique of political leaders and advisers in the coalition who are pushing a hardline stance.

“When Uhuru gave a speech on Madaraka Day, he said he was ready to engage in serious talks with the Opposition. A few days later, he changes his mind. He should not be dissuaded from these urgent talks by those around him for he is the one who will face the political storm that is coming,” insisted Raila.

Raila wants KDF withdrawn from Somalia

The former Prime Minister who addressed members of the Somali community in Eastleigh said the continued stay of Kenya Defence Forces soldiers in Somalia is hurting Kenyans.

“It is high time the Government should evaluate whether there is any reason to still have our soldiers at Somalia. Does their continued stay in Somali bring peace to our country?” he posed.“We went there because there were many attacks then by the thugs.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta has insisted that he has no intention of withdrawing the troops from the war torn country until they accomplish their mission.

Kenyan forces that are now fighting under the AMISOM command moved into Somalia in 2011 and have continued to boast of major success in neutralising the Al Shabaab militia.

Odinga also challenged the Government to enhance security instead of launching ad-hoc operations that are allegedly targeted at one community.

“The kind of operation we saw here was discriminatory; this should not happen,” he argued.

The Usalama Watch operation has seen over 2,000 people arrested and screened with more than 200 being deported to their countries for lack of legal documents.

Explosive materials and illegal fire arms were recovered but critics of the operation argue it was targeted at the Somali community.

The operation was mainly carried out at Eastleigh in Nairobi and in some parts of the coast region mostly in Mombasa County.

KPL - Bring on Gor, Leopards declare

Dutch head coach, Hendrik Pieter de Jongh believes a win in Sunday’s KPL Mashemeji derby against arch rivals Gor Mahia, will inspire the side to erase the disappointment of losing the Cecafa Nile Basin Cup final.

This comes after the club petitioned the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) to defer the match to allow Ingwe recharge their batteries from a gruelling run of fixtures at the inaugural regional event that pools domestic cup winners from Cecafa affiliates.

He was speaking to Capital Sport on Thursday when the team touched down at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Sudan where they lost 2-1 at the final hurdle at the hands of Uganda’s SC Victoria University.

The team was warmly received by Isukuti drums as fans decked in their blue and white stripes jerseys camping at the busy airport as early as 6 am before they were later on hosted to a breakfast by Secretary General George Aladwa who rewarded them with Sh300,000 (USD 3, 426,615).

“The tournament was good since we learnt a lot on our weakness and strength although we did not come home with the trophy. We were the better side in the entire tournament but we lost it in the final, that’s how football is since the match had to have a winner.

“Victoria were a good side especially in the first half but in the second period we changed formation but we were unlucky since the opponents scored in injury time to win the competition,” De Jongh observed.
Speedy winger Paul Were said they lost to a better side and suffered the absence of forward Noah Wafula and midfielder Bernard Mang’oli who were sent off in their semi-final clash against Burundi’s Academie Tchite during the tense decider.

“We had a nice outing and I never expected something like this to happen but I thank our fans who rallied behind us al through the tournament.“We worked as a team and that’s why we reached the final although it was not that easy because we missed our two key players who received red cards but I thank all the players for their commitment.“We played well since we did not have a good run in the league but we proved to our supporters in Cecafa and thank God we finished second though we wanted to lift the trophy,” Were who was the stand-in captain in the two weeks long regional tournament stated.

Focus on derby
Ingwe who were in high spirits, were upbeat ahead of their Mashemeji derby, the first this season despite Aladwa writing to KPL and FKF, requesting to have the game postponed to give Leopards ample time to prepare.

“The players have been playing away in Sudan for the last two weeks and they have arrived this morning, they need a rest. We have sent a letter to both football bodies to at least postpone the match for as to prepare adequately.“We are playing against Gor who are our rivals and not any other club so they should give us at least one week,” Aladwa told Capital Sport.

De Jongh however, declared he will give priority to players who show quality in training as he looks forward to select the strongest squad.“Players should prove themselves in training to be selected to the starting lineup because there is no one big or small.“We are set to go to camp from tomorrow to prepare for this big game although I have little knowledge about Gor after following them in the internet. This is a derby I don’t expect it to be easy but we will make a strong line up and 90 minutes plus hard fighting will give us maximum points,” the Dutchman who will be on the touchline for the first time in a KPL match underscored.
On his part Were said, “The derby will be a challenge to us because we have had a poor run in the league but we will give our all since our fans expects more from us.“We hope to carry on our good run from Sudan in the match since the tournament brought us together and we are more committed. I believe we will give our best and I’m 100 percent sure we will win,” Were said.

Leopards are 12th on the log with 11 points but with a game at hand while defending champions Gor are perched at the summit with 29 points.

Athletics - Kiplagat, Sum rule Rome

World champion, Eunice Sum and Commonwealth winner, Silas Kiplagat, were among the big winners at the Rome Golden Gala Thursday night, the fourth 2014 IAAF Diamond League meet of the season.

Kiplagat and Djibouti’s Ayanleh Souleiman battled for supremacy over the mile in Eugene on Saturday, with the latter winning in a superb national record of 3:47.32 to the Kenyan’s personal best of 3:47.88.
But five days later, in the Italian capital over the slightly shorter 1500m, the tables were turned as Kiplagat pulled away in the final 50 metres to win in 3:30.44 with Djibouti’s world indoor champion second this time in 3:31.89.

World champion Asbel Kiprop was more of a factor in this race than he had been in the Eugene mile and the Kenyan tried to challenge off the last bend but had no answer to the acceleration of the two men in front of him and came home third in 3:31.89.

Another Kenyan winner came, fairly predictably, in the 3000m steeplechase but wasn’t predictable was the man who crossed the line first, and on this occasion it was Jairus Birech.

Running away from the rest of the field with just over laps to go and with a 40-metre lead at the bell, Birech finished in 8:06.20 for the third-fastest time of his career.

He beat a host of better-known fellow Kenyans, including Paul Kipsiele Koech, who was second in 8:10.53 and former Olympics and World champion, Brimin Kipruto who was third. In the women 800m, Sum executed a tactically perfect 800m and was in pole position with 120 metres to go and had enough speed in her legs to keep her rivals at bay, winning in 1:59.49.

Behind her, the Cuban teenage talent Sahily Diago showed good maturity in only her second European meeting – the first being the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships – and held off plenty of more experienced runners to finish second in 2:00.01.

Having clocked a world-leading 1:57.74 on home soil in Havana just two weeks ago, the 18-year-old Diago could be one of the potential stars of the forthcoming IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene next month.

Elsewhere, American Justin Gatlin outclassed the men’s 100-metre field at the as Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim continued to soar by beating Ukrainian world champion Bohdan Bondarenko in the men’s high jump. Gatlin, who served a four-year drugs ban from 2006 to 2010, clocked a winning time of 9.91secs to finish comfortably ahead of Jamaica’s Nesta Carter, while Britain’s Adam Gemili was third.
It was a repeat of last year’s success for Gatlin, who in 2013 edged Usain Bolt on the line to beat the Jamaican for the first time.

Barshim, meanwhile, had the sparse crowd at the Olympic Stadium on their feet with a string of strong performances before triumphing with a new personal best of 2.41m.

In doing so the 22-year-old — who took bronze at the London Olympics in 2012 and won silver at last year’s world championships in Moscow — matched the year’s best height set by Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov of Russia in Doha.

Scare at Uhuru Park over unattended bag

There was a security scare at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park Friday afternoon over an abandoned bag with police being called in to check its contents.

Police cordoned off the area, delaying preparations for the rally to be held at the venue on Saturday.
The bag was later claimed by a young man presumed to be its owner.

The Park is the venue for the Saturday’s political rally to be held by the opposition Cord coalition politicians, to welcome home the party principal Raila Odinga.

Mr Odinga is set to arrive Saturday from the US where he has been on a lecture tour for more than two months.
Cord party leaders led by vice president Kalonzo Musyoka addressed a press conference at the venue, where they urged supporters to keep calm during the planned rally.

Earlier Friday, Mr Odinga appealed to his supporters remains peaceful as they prepare to welcome him.

How Boda Boda operators in Kitengela built an estate by saving Sh100 a day

It all started in November 2009 after the boda boda operators got tired of frequent arrests by traffic police and the squalid conditions of the houses they were living in.

“The police were arresting our members even for little traffic offences and this angered us since we were losing motor bikes in the process due to confiscation. We then saw it wise to start a saving plan to help us paying for the fines as well as to improve our living conditions,” says Aloise Mwai, the group’s chairman.

To achieve this, the group came up with three goals: Planting trees in Kitengela town to help reduce dust; building themselves houses; and buying motorcycles for each member, rather than riding hired ones.

They have succeeded in buying themselves motorcycles; tree planting is on-going (although they say they are facing several challenges, including lack of seeds, high maintenance costs that include frequent watering and cultivation). Currently, they are in the process of completing houses for  members.

Advice

Before starting the real estate project, they approached the Isinya District Co-operative Officer, Frank Maina, who advised them to form a group through which they could get loans. That is when they registered Kitengela Motorcycle Owners (Kitemoto) with 200 members.

However, about 100 members quit, saying the group would be like another pyramid scheme.

“Since we had set goals and we were focused on attaining them, we decided to move on,” says group secretary Gathaga Maina.

The group went for training on financial management, bookkeeping and savings.

They then approached the National Co-operative Housing Union (Nachu) nine months after inception. Nachu told them they could save and own houses and pay back at a low interest rate.

“What inspired us more to own houses was the fact that if we channelled the money we were spending on rent every month into repaying the Nachu loan for seven years, we could each own a Sh430,000 house,” says Gathaga.

They each started saving Sh100 per day in 2010. When each member’s savings hit Sh60,000, they bought a 50-acre land in Millennium area in Kisaju, Kajiado County, at Sh15 million.

“It was not an easy task saving Sh100 per day…it was a sacrifice that forced most of us to give up on leisure activities and focus on saving,” says John Ndegwa, a member.

Today, the 100 members are beaming with joy, since they are the proud owners of the Ngasemo estate.

Located 800m from Namanga-Kajiado Road and 13km from Kitengela town on an earth road, the estate comprises 100 bedsitters (starter units) for the members and 24 three-bedroom bungalows, ready for occupation. Each bungalow is going for Sh4.7 million to the public.

The starter units come with extra space for expansion. Since only 50 members have been able to pay the required Sh7,600 per month, the rest of the 50 units are rented to mama mbogas, who pay the Sh7,600 per month.

The bungalows come with tiled floors, two bedrooms and one master ensuite, with modern kitchen consisting of sink, tap, work tops, upper and lower kitchen cabinets and dining area-cum living room.

Present situation

The estate has borehole water. Landscaping is to be done soon; power connection is being worked on. Also in place is chain link fence. A perimeter wall has also been planned. A septic tank has been installed for sewage disposal.

The members are toying with the idea of renting houses belonging to those who will not be willing to stay in the estate to students from the soon-to-be-constructed Tangaza College and existing institutions like KAG University and Kampala International University.

The members are, however, calling upon the Government to help them through youth fund to clear the loans so that they can start planning for phase two of the estate. The membership has since increased to 400.

“If we get funding from the government, we will be able to pay the loan quickly within less than seven years since loan is on reducing balance,” says Aloise.

Aloise is also requesting the Kajiado County government to build roads leading to the estates, including Ngasemo, which gets muddy when it rains.

The group also offers products for members like emergency loans.

According to Timothy Lekake, Eastern Regional Housing Officer with Nachu, the union works closely with various housing co-operatives to ensure decent living for low-income Kenyans.

Any interested group has to pay an affiliation fee of Sh12,500 — Sh2,500 caters for registration while Sh10,000 is for shareholding (a share is Sh10). “We had to conduct a needs assessment first for the members to ascertain the financial and income status and found that they were okay and went ahead to build for them houses,” says Lekake . He added: “The main objective of this project is to eliminate the mushrooming of slums and provide decent houses for the low-income class and those living in informal settlements.” Lekake said Nachu has already done such projects in Nairobi’s Kawangware slums, Nakuru, Kondele in Kisumu, Mlolongo and now Kitengela.

Frank Maina, the Isinya Sub County Co-operative Officer who registers co-operatives within the sub-county, applauded the boda boda operators.

“I am proud of this project because many people, including myself, used to view boda boda operators as people with no vision. They have come up with a project worth emulating,” he told Home and Away at the project’s site.

He lauded the members for their discipline to save and manage their time well.

Aloise said Kitemoto members are also looking for a biogas investor to install the bio digester, which they hope to produce alternative energy to serve the estate.

Today, the Kitemoto chairman is a busy person, with different groups across the country inviting him for lectures.

“We are willing to share with more groups out there on how we got to where we are today,” he says.

Di Maria: It hurts to be linked with Tottenham

The Real Madrid winger was strongly rumoured to be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu last summer as los Blancos made room for Gareth Bale, but is determined to stay
Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria says that "it hurts" to have been linked with a move to Tottenham last summer.

The Argentine was frequently rumoured to be nearing an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013 as los Blancos made room for Gareth Bale, though Mesut Ozil was the player to eventually make way as he joined Arsenal.

Speculation continues to follow Di Maria, who played a key role in Madrid's Champions League triumph, but he is adamant that he will stay if the club want him to do so.

"It hurts when you're always doing your best for your club and then you hear that you might be going to Tottenham," he told Marca.

"I spoke with the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] last summer. I wanted to stay and he wanted me to stay as well. He told me that he counted on me and it was up to me from then on.

"I have grown a lot under Ancelotti. He got the best out of me. Things have gone well and I made the right decision to stay.

"I am not going to lie, I know that there are clubs that want to sign me and can match Real Madrid's demands but that’s up to my representatives and the club. I will stay if the club wants me to stay.

"I am not thinking about my future now. We will see what Madrid have in mind, whether they want me to stay or leave.

"I am happy at Madrid. I had a great season and always had everybody’s support but sometimes you don’t have a choice, even when you want to stay yourself."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger signs contract extension

After months of speculation, the Arsenal manager has signed a new contract.

After months of speculation, and a couple months of panic where it looked like he might not sign, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has signed a new contract, which will take him until May 2017, which will take his Arsenal tenure to over 20 years.

Wenger said "I want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world. We are all determined to bring more success to this club", while the chairman, Sir Chips Keswick and majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, were understandably delighted.

Giroud reveals he is in talks over new Arsenal contract

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he is in negotiations with the club with a view to extending his contract beyond 2016

Giroud, who signed from Montpellier for £12 million two summers ago, has become an integral part of the Arsenal side since the departure of Robin van Persie and is intent on building on recent successes.

"I have two years left on my contract [until June 2016] but we are in negotiations to extend. For now, I am here. There are many great things to do,"

he told footmercato.net.

"I feel comfortable in the Premier League. My first season not too bad, I had a pretty good second. I hope to do even better [next season]. I am progressing from year to year, the same as the team."

He scored two goals for France on Monday night as Les Bleus warmed up for the World Cup with a 4-0 friendly victory over Norway.

Tottenham appoint Pochettino as new manager

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a five-year deal.

The Argentine resigned from Southampton after 18 months with the club.

The 42-year-old becomes Tottenham's 10th manager since 2001 and replaces Tim Sherwood who was sacked on 13 May.

"This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," Pochettino told the Spurs website.

Pochettino's assistant Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez have also left Southampton to join him at Spurs.

The White Hart Lane club started last season with Andre Villas-Boas as manager but sacked him in December.

Sherwood replaced the Portuguese and led the club to a sixth place finish in the top-flight.

Tottenham also sold forward Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record £85.3m fee last summer as they signed Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela.

"There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad," added Pochettino.

"Tottenham Hotspur has a huge following across the world and I have great admiration for the passion the fans show for this team.

"We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve."

The former Espanyol boss took over at Southampton in January 2013, when he replaced Nigel Adkins, and led them to eighth last season - their highest finish in the Premier League.

Kenyan man murdered in US days after his graduation

A Kenyan man who had just graduated from a US University has died after being assaulted at a weekend party in Dallas, Texas.

Brian Okemwa Gitenya was struck by an American man, Xavien Deavonni Griffin, during an argument on Monday morning.

According to Jambonewspot.com, a Kenyan Diaspora news Website, the incident occurred as scores of Kenyans swarmed Dallas from all over the US to celebrate Memorial Day, one of the four

most notable holidays on the US calendar. Gitenya had arrived in Dallas on Friday evening from St Paul Minnesota where he lived. He had reportedly attended one of the many parties after arriving in the Texan capital.

Gitenya had just graduated from an Iowa University with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. He was among the few students who graduated cum laude (with distinction) during the 83rd commencement ceremony held on May 17 at Briar Cliff University in Iowa.

Last year, he graduated with an Applied Science Associate degree in Nursing fom Iowa Lakes Community College.

Dallas Police have told the local media that the assailant has been arrested following the attack which happened at 5.45am.

By the time of going to press, details of what led to the altercation were scanty.

The gun drama occurred at the Caribea restaurant

Poor rainfall pushes up cost of power

Consumers will pay an extra Sh2 per unit of electricity starting this month.

This is because depressed rainfall has reduced the water levels in key dams, forcing the country to use thermal power.

The government had pledged to lower the cost of electricity by 40 per cent to make the country an attractive investment destination.

This promise will now be put on hold.

“The fuel cost charge will rise to Sh7.22/kwh from Sh5.19/kwh from May as a result of increased thermal generation.

This will ensure recovery of unrecovered amounts from January to May 2014,” said Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) acting director-general Fredrick Nyang’.

Kenya Power has since January been recovering the pass-through cost from monthly power bills as more thermal output displaced hydropower, with the dams shedding 10 metres of their spilling points this month.

“The outstanding amount is Sh2.4 billion.

This will be gradually recovered in the monthly power bills up to November this year,” said the Kenya Power managing director, Mr Ben Chumo, during a tour of the Masinga dam last week.

Thermal power currently accounts for 42 per cent of the total electricity, more than double the level recorded during the same period last year when it accounted for just 19 per cent.

Expensive thermal power was to be removed last December and replaced with affordable geothermal electricity.

ERC says the expected cost of fuel charge is likely to reduce with the commissioning of 280MW geothermal projects and resumption of the short rains in October.

Upsurge of thermal use

“The commissioning of the 280MW geothermal power projects experienced delays, hence the need to reduce the extraction levels so as to extend the available storage.

Consequently, an upsurge of thermal use to meet demand, hence increasing fuel costs,” said Dr Nyang’.

Hydro is the predominant source of power in Kenya but it is currently facing challenges because of low rain.

This has left the country in a tough situation, with the possibility of rationing power or turning to diesel plants.

Kenya’s current installed capacity is 1,700MW against demand for 2,236MW, leaving a shortfall of 536MW, and this is after providing for a 30 per cent reserve margin.

While thermals are mainly concentrated at the Coast, completion of the Mombasa-Nairobi 400KV line will also reduce transmission losses, currently at 18 per cent, because of its high voltage carrying capacity to the capital, where 60 per cent of the demand is concentrated.

Manufacturers, however, insist on the availability, stability, and reliability of the power supplied.

“It is better if we have expensive but consistent power in the national grid,” said Pradeep Paunrana, the managing director Athi River Mining Ltd, the cement manufacturers.

Mr Paunrana is also the incoming chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM).

Dedicated lines

“There is a need to catch up on electricity generation.

While this is part of the Jubilee manifesto, it is also in line with the KAM business agenda.

Coordination of these projects with the private sector will avoid passing on unnecessary costs to consumers,” added Mr Paunrana.

“We are among the top 200 consumers of power and we would do with dedicated lines of reliable power.

This will help lower our production costs and make us competitive,” he said.

Transfer news: Arsenal set to re-sign Carlos Vela in £3million transfer

Reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal have activated a buy-back clause to re-sign Carlos Vela for just £3m.

The Mexican left the Emirates Stadium in summer 2011 for €2m after struggling for opportunities under Arsene Wenger – with the Gunners including a €3m clause which allowed them to bring the player back to North London.

The 25-year-old striker has been a sensation in La Liga this season, scoring 15 goals and grabbing 12 assists in 34 starting appearances.

Atletico Madrid were reportedly considering meeting his €30m release clause to replace Diego Costa, but it looks as though Arsenal have beaten Diego Simeone's side and a number of other interested parties.

Vela could operate both as a striker and on the flank, providing Wenger with good cover for Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero reclaims his seat pending appeal

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will continue to serve as governor of Nairobi county until the Supreme Court determines his appeal against a ruling that had nullified his election. This is after Kidero rushed to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to file a petition to appeal the ruling.

In a majority decision by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, it was ruled that Dr Kidero’s challenger during the 2013 gubernatorial election, Ferdinand Waititu had raised sufficient grounds to have the results nullified.

The Supreme Court suspended the ruling by the Court of Appeal that had nullified his election pending determination of the appeal while also issuing an order restraining the Independent Election and Boundary Commission (IEBC) from declaring the seat vacant until the appeal is determined.

Dr  Kidero filed the petition at the Supreme Court through lawyer Tom Ojienda.
